Season 2 episode 6 of the Just-Us YOUth Talk Show aired on Saturday, April 28, 2024. This episode featured special guest Hailly Korman, a senior associate partner at Bellwether. Bellwether is a nonprofit organization that works to ensure that quality education is impactful for all students, especially students in juvenile/secondary schools. Since 2010, Bellwether has over 600 clients and has been featured in places such as USA Today, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, etc.
Throughout this episode, Korman talks about the school-to-prison pipeline and how there are policies in the education systems that create one way of success and once students fall off this path in any capacity, it is very hard to get back on that path.
Similarly, Korman suggests that law enforcement in schools is not the way schools should go when they feel situations are feeling out of control. Instead, she feels all students should be able to seek the same level of emotional support, mental health needs, and social/economic needs to get them back on track and into better situations.
Before her time at Bellwether, Korman spent her time in various jobs fields. She started out as a schoolteacher for nine years. She then transitioned to law school in California. Finally, she worked at a large law firm where she education and civil rights impact litigation before ending up at Bellwether.
